Learn About IPMX Hardware & Software Standards
What is IPMX AV over IP Standard
IPMX, for Internet Protocol Media Experience, is the new free and open standard for AV over IP, the transmission of very high quality video, audio and control signals over standard IP networks.
The new standard is based on SMPTE ST 2110 from the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, but it addresses some additional needs of the Pro AV industry, including HDCP copy protection, network discovery and registration, I/O management, and the enhanced audio channel mapping required for multichannel surround sound and other specialized audio.
IPMX means dynamic, professional video over standard IP networks, including 4K video at 60 frames per second and 4:4:4 color with just 1-Gb/s bandwidth.
The best part is that anyone can download the complete set of standards and build anything they’d like with them. It’s a truly open standard, with everyone involved taking pains to ensure that every piece of equipment built to the IPMX specification works with every other piece, that they are truly interoperable.
IPMX Components
IPMX consists of the complete SMPTE 2110 body of hardware standards, NMOS software standards, plus additional standards and specifications to meet the needs of the pro AV industry.
It’s being promoted by AIMS, a not-for-profit industry consortium dedicated to bringing an open-standards approach to the Pro AV and entertainment industries. The group includes SMPTE, Video Services Forum (VSF), the European Broadcast Union (EBU), the Advanced Media Workflow Association (AMWA) and the Audio Engineering Society (AES).
IPMX is essentially complete and several companies are building products with it to be introduced in 2021.
